ABSTRACT 

This study observes Indonesian-English code-mixing which is expressed by bilingual characters in a movie entitled Obama Anak Menteng. The main objectives of this research are (1) to classify Indonesian-English code-mixing expressed by bilinguals, (2) to investigate how bilingual characters mix two different languages and also (3) to figure out the reasons behind the application of Indonesian-English code-mixing in the movie. This research applies a descriptive qualitative method. This research uses content analysis method as technique of collecting data because the source of data is in the form of electronic document. The primary data of this study are 54 utterances said by bilingual characters. 

From the data analysis, the research discovers that: (1) bilingual characters apply three types of code-mixing encompassing insertion, congruent lexicalization and alternation, (2) bilingual characters perform code-mixing by embedding English items with Indonesian sentence in the form of one word, two or more words forming A-B-A-B pattern, complete clause, incomplete clause, two or more words forming A-B-A pattern and also tag, (3) code-mixing is employed in order to be more comfortable when talking about a particular topic, express group identity, show interjection, be empathic about something and also repeat something for clarification. In the end, this research is expected to give benefits to the future researchers intending to conduct a research by using sociolinguistics approach.
