ABSTRAK When we are talking about the Middle East people, the first thing comes up in our mind is a man with long beard, long shirt and holding an AK-47. That perception is grows significantly in the world especially after the attacked of World Trade Center in New York in 11 September 2001. The pictures of Middle East people also influence by the American Media especially the American movies. In this thesis, the researcher tries to find the reason and an explanation why the Middle East people are presented in negative stereotypes. The researcher uses two American action movies as the subject of research, there are Rules of Engagement directed by William Friedkin, produced by Paramount Picture released in 2000 and The Siege directed by Edward Zwick, produced by Twentieth Century Fox in 1999. The researcher uses several theories and approaches to get the reason and an explanation about the background of the stereotyping of the Middle East people as seen in those two movies. The first one is historical background approach, it was used to find the historical connection between the American people and the Middle East people. The second one is Stereotype and Myth in Popular culture, it was used to get an explanation the both concept. The third one sociological theory, it was used to get an explanation about that social phenomenon. The last one is Semiotic film theory, it was used to interpret the movies.
