ABSTRAK

This study explores about the complaints expressions performed by a bullied victim on the Netflix TV Series 13 Reasons Why Season 1.The Bullied victim says the complaints through the expressive speech acts form. Complaints expressions are usually used by the speakers to express their displeasure as a reaction to a past or ongoing action. They also ask their partner to give the remedial act to repair for the loss that the speakers got. In this case, the victim uses the complaints expression to against the bullying action that happened to her. More specifically, this present study aims to analyze the types of complaints that are performed by a bullied victim. It tries to explain the types, how those expressions are delivered by the speaker, and intentions of the complaints expressions. This research is a descriptive qualitative research under the framework of Pragmatics study. The relationship between social phenomenon and methods becomes the focus of this research. The findings reveal that the types of complaints are uttered into two forms, expressive and directive speech acts. There are seven types of expressive speech acts, namely swearing, blaming, judging, regretting, refusing, mocking, and denying. There is one kind of directive speech act, namely commanding. It is found that the speaker utters the speech acts mostly in high intonation and exploits some body gestures. The results also show that the complaints expressions are delivered in various intentions, like to explain someone’s mistake, to strengthen arguments, to make self defense, etc
