ABSTRAK

This research discusses the meaning, the forms, the types, and the functions of slang used in Baby Driver movie (2017). The main objective in this research is to know the types of slang and the functions of slang used in this movie. The writer uses descriptive qualitative method. Furthermore, sociolinguistics is applied as the frame of study. The writer uses the movie script as the source of data. Then she also uses the setting and the background of the movie to identify the meaning and the functions of the slang. Through this research, the writer finds three findings. First, there are three types of slang used in Baby Driver movie including society, criminal, and police slang. Second, there are two forms of slang used by the characters, words and phrases. Meanwhile, the third finding in this research is the functions of the slang. There are ten functions of slang in this movie. They are to address, to form intimate atmosphere, to express impression, to show intimacy, to reveal anger, annoyance, or disappointment, to threaten or to mock, to express a blaming or accusing, to show high spirit, to persuade someone in conversation, and to be secret or as identification marker. Finally, this research is expected to be a useful reference for the other researchers in the future, especially for English Department student who is interested in analyzing slang. The writer also hopes that this research can give better knowledge about slang languages.
