The objectives of this study are to classify the types of code switching and to identify the functions of code switching happened in Perahu Kertas movie, as well as to find out the speakers’ motivation in uttering code switching when they converse to each other in the movie. In conducting this study, the descriptive qualitative method is used since the data collected in this study are the utterances of conversations uttered by the characters in Perahu Kertas movie.
The result of this study shows that there are three types of code switching happened in Perahu Kertas movie. They are tag switching, intra-sentential code switching, and inter-sentential code switching. Moreover, the functions of code switching found in this movie involve quotation, addressee specification, interjection, reiteration, message qualification and personalization vs objectification. Furthermore, the speakers’ motivation in uttering code switching in this movie are talking about particular topic, quoting somebody else, expressing feeling about something, inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors (interjection), repeating used for clarification, clarifying the speech content for interlocutor, expressing group identity, and softening or strengthening request or command.
Finally, the result of this study can be additional references for the next research to investigate Sociolinguistics, especially in the study of code switching. Moreover, since this study analyzes types and functions of code switching as well as speakers’ motivation in uttering code switching, it will be more interesting for the next researcher to analyze it by using another theory of code switching. Additionally, it is suggested for the next researcher to analyze using other sources of data, such as novel and TV program.
