Surakarta city is one of the Central Java cities in Indonesia. Its solid waste management system is open dumping which is unsustainable and doesn?t meet the best practices from waste management perspective. Surakarta city has only one landfill, Putri Cempo; which is located in Mojosongo. The increased volume and diverse characteristics of municipal solid generation of the city indicates that the method is no longer possible in addition to the fact that it requests high operating cost and its insufficient landscape for waste disposal. Surakarta city has no technology to process its solid wastes; the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle principles doesn?t exist. This study aims to identify solid waste collection method and the used technology in order to be able to identify their contribution to the groundwater quality as the city only uses open dumping system which proves that decomposed organic, that are found in large number, waste percolate until the groundwater aquifers. The sampling techniques used to collect data were simple random and purposive techniques. In-depth interviews have been conducted with the management unity and the community exposed to the landfill impacts; as well the water samples to evaluate its quality were taken in the neighboring area where samples to check coliform was taken 20m away from the landfill while samples to evaluate other parameters were taken in 200m from the landfill. SWOT analysis was used in order to analyze the internal and external factors of the Solid waste management of Surakarta city. Based on the results of the conducted study; organic wastes are found in large volume in the wastes dumped at the landfill, organic wastes biodegrade quickly and release foul pungent odors. Yet the discharge of those organic wastes attracts rats, flies. and these vectors spread diseases such as diarrhea to the community living around the landfill.  Due to the lack of best practices in solid waste management the solid waste accumulation continues to increase and consequently the landfill pollutes groundwater. This was proved by the results form laboratory analysis which showed that within all the parameters analyzed from two sites surrounding the landfill; COD, NO3 and total coliform don?t meet the desirable limits of the drinking water quality, thus the current solid waste management system slightly contribute in the pollution of groundwater in Mojosongo neighborhood. The research has also pinpointed the barriers in Surakarta solid waste management system.
The study has concluded that the current condition of Mojosongo landfill and the poor water quality are resulted from the poor solid waste management of the city, in which the collection of solid wastes is done without the application of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle principles. In addition to the lack of technology to manage wastes at the landfill,
