This research uses descriptive qualitative method which produces data descriptive in the form of conversation from the Life as We Know It movie. In this method, four procedures should be done, as follows: collecting data, classifying data, analysing data, and making the conclusion of the data analysis. This research uses total sampling research. The conversation in the movie that contains complaint expressions are taken as data.

The result of data analysis points out that: 1) the use of direct and indirect complaints by the character in the  Life as  We Know  It  movie, 2)there are eight strategies to utter complaining word, including: hint, annoyance, ill consequences, acquisition, direct acquisition, modified blame, explicit condemnation of accused action, and explicit condemnation of accused person, and 3)there are three functions of complaining used by the characters of the movies, including: to break the relationship or create social distance, to
repair the relationship and improve the situation relationship, and to show negative feeling or share specific negative evaluation.

The conclusions of the research are as follows: 1) the use of the indirect complaining is more often used than direct strategy, 2) there are six strategies used in the complaining word comprising: hint, annoyance, ill consequences, modified blame, explicit condemnation of accused action, and explicit condemnation of accused person, and 3) the characters in the movie use all of the functions of complaining.
