ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to find out the correlation between (1) grammatical mastery and writing skill; (2) students’ English interest and writing skill; (3) grammatical mastery and students’ English interest toward writing skill. This is a correlational research method which is a kind of quantitative research. The population was the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 3 Boyolali in the academic year of 2017/2018. The sample was 31 students of XI IIS 3 that taken by cluster random sampling. The instruments in collecting the data were test items for grammatical mastery and writing skill and questionnaire for students’ English interest.

The results of this study show that 1) there is positive correlation grammatical mastery and writing skill (rxly=0.4883); 2) there is a positive correlation between students’ English interest and writing skill (rx2y=0.4858); and 3) there is a positive correlation among grammatical mastery, students’ English interest simultaneously and writing skill (R = 0.7356).

Based on the result of the study, grammatical mastery and students’ English interest have contribution to the students’ writing skill especially in the students’ score and the process to write a text. Therefore, grammatical mastery and students’ English interest can be implemented in teaching and learning of writing. An English teacher needs to arrange some activities in his lesson plan which can increase grammatical mastery and students’ English interest that are related to the teaching and learning of writing.
