×ABSTRAK
2006. This thesis is designed to describe strategies in translating swearing utterances in the film entitled Sideways and to know the accuracy of the translation.
This study is a descriptive qualitative research. The sampling technique employed in this research is total sampling. There are many swearing utterances in the film but the same utterances with the same translation were taken only one as a datum. Then all the selected swearing utterances were picked as the primary data. Besides, the secondary data were taken from the scores of the questionnaire given by the three raters. From the analysis, the researcher found six strategies in translating the swearing utterances: translation by using swearing word or phrase of similar either expressive meaning or form or both (14 of 100 data), translation by using swearing word or phrase of similar expressive meaning but dissimilar form (1 data), translation by using swearing word or phrase of less expressive meaning (5 data), translation by using neutral word or phrase (21 data), translation by using proper interjection (10 data), and translation by omission (49 data).
Meanwhile, of 100 data, 47 were highly accurate translations, 37 were accurate, 6 were less accurate, and the rest or 10 were omitted or misinterpreted. Furthermore, from the mean of the score of the accuracy, it can be concluded that the translations of the swearing are accurate since expressive meaning of the utterances in the source texts are conveyed to the target texts regardless of the swearing is not translated.
There are also interesting phenomena found in this study. The translator of the film is not always correct in translating the swearing utterances. Blasphemous interjections, like god, Jesus, Christ, Jesus Christ, which contextually can express any feelings are mostly transferred into astaga. Astaga can represent only certain feeling, that is, shock/surprise and sadness at once, not any feelings. Besides that, in this research, literal translation can still be applied in certain contexts.
The purpose of this research is to make a plea for a better understanding of certain linguistic realities. The knowledge on the subject, then, is not to make it popular as a form of language, which is worthy to say, and familiar in daily life but to prevent people from abusing that type of language.
