The objectives of this research are to identify: 1) to find out how far the students’ participation improve when Time Token is implemented in the teaching and learning process; 2) to describe and explain the teacher’s ways to overcome difficulties encountered during the use of Time Token.

The method used in this research is a classroom action research which was conducted in two cycles at the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kebakkramat, in which in the first cycle there were 3 meetings and also in the second cycle there were 3 meetings. Each cycle consisted of four steps: planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The qualitative data were collected through interview, observation, field note, questionnaire, photograph and tests. The qualitative data were collected through speaking test. in this research focus on students’ speaking skill. The data were compared and analyzed to get a conclusion as the result of this research.

The findings of the research show that Time Token Method could enhance students’ participation. The improvement of students’ participation includes: 1) by implementing Time Token Method, the frequency of the students in answering questions during learning process increased; (2) the frequency of the students in asking question during learning process increased; (3) the frequency of the students in showing the good cooperation in discussion increased; (4) students became more enthusiastic in following the learning process; (5) students became more confident to gave comment or suggestion in learning. Besides, the difficulties of using Time Token in English class that the teacher should: (1) explain the rule of Time Token in bahasa also; (2) consider the appropriate time; (3) slightly pressed the passive student to speak. In addition, the students speaking’ skill also enhanced. It can be seen from students’ speaking skill score; in pre-test their mean score was 60.50, in test 1 it was 65.13 and in test 2 it was 75.56.

Considering the result of the study, it is highly recommended for the teacher to implement Time Token in the class to have more joyful lesson with the full attendance of active and encouraged students. However, the teacher also need to be aware with the difficulties which appear in the learning process.
