Language choice in wedding ceremonies (a case study at KUA Sragen regency) a sociolinguistics approach

× ABSTRACT 2006. It is a descriptive qualitative research in sociolinguistics field. The source of data is the recorded wedding ceremony at KUA Sragen Regency. By using purposive sampling technique, the researcher found 41 samples. The researcher classified them based on the types of codes in it is used and analyze the forms of codes used by the officer of marriage registration in wedding ceremonies at KUA Sragen, the factors influencing the choice of codes, and the social meanings each choice of codes. There are some findings in this research: 1. The forms of codes used by the officer of marriage registration in wedding ceremonies at KUA Sragen. The forms of code uses by the officer of marriage registration in wedding ceremonies at KUA Sragen is appropriate with the married couple choice. The officer of marriage registration usually uses Javanese, Indonesian and Arabic languages. Krama Javanese level uses in marriage vows celebration of marriage, Madya Javanese level uses in confirmation of couple’s profile, while Ngoko Javanese level is only used for giving example in wedding sermon. In this research, Formal Indonesian language uses by the officer of marriage registration in marriage vows is because of the married couple choice and The Classical Arabic language uses by the officer of marriage registration in wedding sermon on the wedding ceremonies is carried out in Moslem religion. 2. The factors influencing the choice of codes. There are four factors influencing the choice of codes, namely: participants involved in the wedding ceremonies, formality of the situation of the whole procession of wedding ceremonies, educational background and profession of the married couple. 3. The social meanings each choice of codes. Each code has its own social meanings. In this research there are four social meanings of each code, namely: showing intimacy, respect, religion and showing solidarity. From the findings, the use of certain codes in wedding ceremonies at KUA Sragen Regency must consider three matters, namely the forms of code used by the officer of marriage registration in wedding ceremonies at KUA Sragen, factors influencing the choice of codes and the social meanings each choice of codes. By considering these three factors, a language user can communicate well In reply to: wedding ceremonies at KUA Sragen Regency.
