Abstrak :

The objectives of this research are: (1) to elaborate how recorded CNN and BBC News can enhance students’ listening skill, and (2) to describe the class situation when listening to recorded CNN and BBC News is implemented in this study.
The method used in this research was classroom action research. The research was conducted in first grade class MIA 3, SMA Negeri 7 Surakarta from November 2015 until May 2016. The procedure of the action research consisted of planning the research, implementing the action, observing, and reflecting the result of the research. The research was carried out in two cylce, each cycle consisted of four meetings. The qualitative data was collected through observation, questionnaire, interview, field notes, and pictures. The quantitative data was collected from the test. The qualitative data was analyzed by following these steps: data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion (drawing and verification). The quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics.
The result of the research showed that learning listening using recorded CNN and BBC News could enhance students’ listening skill and class situation. The use of recorded CNN and BBC News during listening lesson could enhance students’ listening skill in: (1) identifying general idea, (2) identifying main idea, (3) finding explicit information, and (4) finding implicit information from the spoken text. The enhancement of students’ listening skill could be seen from the pre-test, post test 1, and post test 2 mean score that improved from 62.3, 67.6 to 81. The mean score of post test 2 was higher than English lesson’s passing grade (75). Besides, there were also some changes in class situation after the implementation of recorded CNN and BBC News: (1) the listening class became more interesting, (2) students were motivated to do listening activities, (3) students became more active and interactive in answering questions and giving opinion, and (4) the class was more comfortable.
After the research, the researcher gives suggestion in using recorded CNN and BBC News as an alternative material to enhance students’ listening skill dan class situation.
