Abstrak
The objectives of this research are to find correlation between (1) listening habit and translation ability; (2) vocabulary mastery and translation ability; and (3) listening habit and vocabulary mastery simultaneously and translation ability.
This Research used correlational method. The study was carried out in June 2017 at English Department. The population was all the 2nd semester students in the academic year of 2016/2017 which consisted of two classes with the number of students around 60. The sample was from class A with 29 students. The students were chosen with cluster random sampling technique. Questionnaire was used to collect data of students’ listening habit, multiple choice tests was used for vocabulary mastery, and essay test was used for translation ability. Simple Correlation and Multiple Regression Correlation is used to analyze the data.
The result of data analysis shows that in the level of significance ? = 0.05 (1) there is positive correlation between grammatical competence and translation ability (rx1y) = 0.405 > rt 0.367); (2) there is positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and translation ability (rx1y) = 0.373 > rt 0.369); (3) there is positive between listening habit, vocabulary mastery, and translation ability. (Rx12y) = 0.507 > rt 0.367. The listening habit and vocabulary mastery are simultaneously contribute to the translation ability (Fo = 4.513 > Ft 3.354).
Based on the result of the study, it is found that there is a positive correlation between listening habit and translation ability. There is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and translation ability. There is a positive correlation between listening habit and vocabulary mastery simultaneously and translation ability of the 2nd semester students of English Department in the academic year of 2016/2017.
The result of this research also shows that listening habit and vocabulary mastery are important factors that give contribution to translation ability. Both listening habit and vocabulary contribute to translation ability at 25.78%. It shows that both listening habit and vocabulary mastery are important factors that influence translation ability.
