ABSTRACT

The aims of this study is to find out: (1) the implementation of critical reading strategies in the academic writing course; and (2) to what extent critical reading strategies support the students in writing course.

The method which is used in this study is the case study that is included as the quantitative research. The population of this study is the fourth-semester students of one of the universities in Surakarta in the academic year of 2017/20018. The instruments which are used to collect the data are observation, interview, questionnaire, and document analysis. Theseinstruments were used to observe the implementation of critical reading strategies in an academic writing course and how far those strategies support the students in the course.

The results of this research show that: 1) the implementation of critical reading strategies in an academic writing course is helpful for the students during the writing process, especially in the writing preparation. The critical reading strategies support the students to understand or comprehend the texts that have read and also that strategies support the students to build the students’  understanding beyond the text. The students are able to build their opinions and critiques about the issues of the texts.  2) the critical reading strategies support the students to find and identify some elements which embedded in the articles, such as the outward features of the text such as the title of the articles , the journal name, the author, the year published; the purpose of the research; the claims made, reasons, and evidences of the text’s issue; and the sources used in the texts. All of those elements are used by the students to support their writing assignment.
