The focus of this research is the analysis of techniques and quality of translation of translated titles found in 105 children’s fairytale stories. The objectives of this study are to find out the translation techniques used by the translator to the title, and to know the effect of the translation techniques used on the quality of the translation in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability.
This research used a descriptive qualitative method and was designed as a single-embedded case study. It used document and informant sources. The data were collected by employing a purposive sampling technique. The research was conducted by using content analysis, questionnaire and then discussed it together with the raters and respondents. In the content analysis, the researcher collected the data from 9 bilingual children fairytale storybooks. The data found were 105 data.
The result of data analysis shows that: (1) The translation techniques used by translator are 11 techniques, there are: Established Equivalent (84 data); Borrowing (34 data); Particularization (11 data); Generalization (8 data); Literal Translation (7 data); Amplification (7 data); Reduction (4 data); Transposition (2 data); Variation (2 data); Calque (one datum); and Modulation (one datum). (2) The result of the accuracy translation shows that: 97 data (92.38%) are accurate translation and 8 data (7.62%) are less accurate translation. The average score of the mean for accuracy is 2.92 meaning that the translation is accurate. The result of the acceptability translation shows that: 92 data (87.62%) are acceptable translation and 13 data (12.38%) are less acceptable translation. The average score of the mean for acceptability is 2.87 meaning that the translation is acceptable. The result of the readability translation shows that: 102 data (97.14%) are high readable translation and 3 data (2.86%) are medium readable translation. The average score of the mean for readability is 2.97 meaning that the translation is readable.
From the result, it can be concluded that established equivalent techniques produce accurate, acceptable, and readable translation. It is also found that translating title for children should pay attention to the context of the story, cultural background and language use in the target language.
