This research describes The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway as metaphor of the life of the author. This is a descriptive qualitative library research. The main data are words, phrases, sentences taken from The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway. The supporting data or secondary data for this research are taken from biography of the author, articles, journals, books, critics and other academic writings. The objectives of this research are to describe the struggle undertaken by Santiago, the main character of the novel and to describe how Santiago’s struggle reflects Hemingway’s struggle in his life. This research uses semiotics approach and applies Pierce’s theory of Semiotics. The final result shows that the main  character, Santiago has four struggles, they are struggle against the fish, against social disparity, against society, and against nature. Santiago's struggle with the marlin, which is a struggle to face and overcome his own weaknesses, is also a metaphor of Hemingway’s struggle in his life. This shows that the character of Santiago in the novel is definitely a metaphor for Hemingway. Santiago’s struggles out in the sea by himself are very similar to Hemingway’s struggles in his life
