Abstrak

This research is aimed to (1) identify whether Conference and Written Feedback can improve students’ grammar in writing hortatory exposition text (2) investigate students’ opinions about the implementation of Conference and Written Feedback in writing.

This research was carried out in one of private schools in Banyuwangi. The subject of the research was the eleventh grade students of PSIA 1 consisting 21 students. This classroom action research was conducted in two cycles that each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. There were two types of data in this research that were qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were collected by using observation, interview, and questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using a technique proposed by Miles and Huberman consisting of three steps: data reduction, data display, and data verification. Furthermore, the quantitative data were obtained through a pre-test, writing test in cycle 1, and writing test in cycle 2. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics.

The result of the research showed that Conference and Written Feedback could improve all aspects of the students’ grammar in writing hortatory exposition text. In addition, it was obtained through the students’ opinions that Conference and Written Feedback gave positive impact to the students in terms of: (1) motivating them to write; (2) building interaction between the teacher and the students; and (3) making the students aware about their mistakes in the aspects of grammar. Furthermore, Conference and Written Feedback could not solve all the students’ problems in writing because the limitation of the time.

In conclusion, Conference and Written Feedback can improve all aspect of the students’ grammar in writing hortatory exposition text. Therefore, Conference and Written Feedback can be an alternative method for English teachers to teach grammar in writing skill or for future researchers who will conduct the similar research.
