Abstrak

The objectives of this research are to find out: (1) the conditions needed for effective implementation of Three-Step Interview in improving students’ learning motivation in speaking; (2) in what degree Three-Step Interview enhances students’ learning motivation in speaking.
This study is qualitative research and was carried out from January until June 2017 towards Class 8A of SMP N 1 Tawangmangu in the academic year of 2016/2017. The instruments used in this study to collect data are questionnaires and field notes/diaries. The data were analyzed using a qualitative technique.
The result of the study shows that the implementation of three-step interview technique to improve Class 8A students’ learning motivation will be effective when certain conditions are fulfilled: (1) the teacher creates a positive classroom climate, (2) the teacher gives a clear instruction of the technique using an example practiced by the teacher, (3) students are allowed to use both Bahasa Indonesia and English, (4) an interesting and familiar topic for the discussion is used, (5) the technique is combined with task based activity and is done as classroom activity because taken home assignment was not effective, (6) the teacher gives a clear explanation of the material learned, (7) and the student groups are formed by the students freely. The result of the study also shows that the degree of students’ learning motivation in speaking is improved by 5.60%.
