Abstrak

This research aims at analyzing the title translation of fiction book and non-fiction book. The objectives of this research are 1) to classify types of title translation techniques and translation techniques applied by the translator in translating the title of fiction and non-fiction book, and 2) to find out the effect of the techniques to the translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability.
This research applied descriptive-qualitative method. The data of this research are the titles of fiction books and non-fiction books. To collect the data, purposive sampling technique was applied to analyze the data based on the researcher’s criteria. In this research, 154 data, consisting of 88 data from fiction books titles and 66 data from non-fiction books titles were collected. Two methods of data collection were applied; content analysis and a close and open-ended questionnaire that was done with six raters.
The result of the data analysis shows that there are 3 types of title translation technique: 1) to replace the original title with the Indonesian title (16.6%), 2) to give Indonesian title under the original title (54.1%), and 3) to keep the original title (3.8%). In different cases, the combinations of title translation technique are found to translate the book that has double title: main title and subtitle. The combinations are between title translation technique type 1 to translate the main title and type 1 to translate the subtitle (5.7%), and title translation technique type 3 to translate the main title and type 1 to translate the subtitle (18.5%). The books titles are translated using 5 single techniques: 1) discursive creation (33.1%), 2) established equivalent (20.7%), 3) borrowing (3.9%), 4) modulation (0.6%), and 5) generalization (0.6%). There are also multiple techniques applied to translate the titles. The combinations of techniques are: 1) 30 combinations of 2 translation techniques (19.5%), 2) 14 combinations of 3 translation techniques (9.0%), and 3) 2 combinations of 4 translation techniques (1.3%). Dealing with accuracy, established equivalent and borrowing  technique contributes to produce accurate translation, while reduction contributes to produce less accurate translation. Dealing with acceptability, there is no significant impact of the use of certain translation technique to the level of acceptability.
In conclusion, as the essential roles of the book’s title, the translator should consider who the target readers of the book are and the characteristic of each book. Title translation technique type 1 is recommended to translate the titles of books whose target readers have limited access to the source language, i.e. the books for children. For the books that are targeted to adults and young-adults, the application of title translation technique type 2 and type 3 will be just fine because they potentially have more access to the source language. Furthermore, discursive creation is suitable to translate the titles of fiction books because it will make the title sounds more poetic and entertaining. Meanwhile, established equivalent is recommended to translate the titles of non-fiction books that are more informative because the information conveyed by the source text should be well maintained in the target text. The result of this research can be used as reference to conduct a further research related to this study.
