Abstrak

This research is conducted in SMP N 9 Magelang from November 2015 to July 2016. The objectives of this research are to investigate: (1) the teachers’ beliefs on English teaching based on 2013 Curriculum; (2) the factors shaping teachers’ beliefs on English teaching and their classroom practices based on 2013 Curriculum.; and (3) the implementation of teachers’ beliefs in their classroom practices based on 2013 Curriculum.
This study applied a case study method which had been conducted at SMP N 9 Magelang eighth grade in the academic year of 2015/2016. The three English teachers of eighth grade had been explored as particpants of this study. The data were collected through open ended questionnaire, interview, observation, and review of documents. The data were, then, analyzed through Miles and Huberman technique. The result shows that: (1) there are eight beliefs about teaching that including belief about learning objective, syllabus, instructional material, classroom procedure, classroom technique, teachers’ roles, students’ roles and assessment; (2) there are four factors shaping teachers’ beliefs which include: teaching experience, workshop/training, personality factors, and experience as language learner.; and (3) there are six components of teaching that are consistent between teachers’ beliefs and their practices including syllabus, instructional material, classroom technique, teachers’ roles, students’ roles and assessment; while the inconsistency occurs also in learning objective and classroom procedure. Considering the result of this study, belief that is possessed by the English teachers plays an important role in teaching learning process and reaching the teaching goals.
