The study aimed to identify (1) the specific language learning strategies used by adult EFL learners at Pusat Kegiatan Belajar Masyarakat (PKBM) in Karanganyar and (2) how they choose learning strategy so they are able to achieve the preferred competencies. To this aim, five adult EFL learners at Karanganyar District were selected based on their age, that is over 25 years old. The study belongs to descriptive qualitative method. The data were gathered through one-to-one interview, observation, and document analysis technique and then the data were analyzed using Interactive Model of Qualitative Data Analysis Technique. The most strategies used by adult EFL learners are guessing intelligently using linguistic clues and cooperating with the proficient users of the new language. The several factors that influenced the strategy selection are also examined as follow: a) the degree of awareness, b) task requirements, c) age, d) general learning style, e) motivation, and f) the purpose of learning the language.
