ABSTRACK

The objectives if this research are: 1) to explain the use of authentic materials in teaching EFL at a Senior High School in Surakarta; 2) to explain the problems of using authentic materials in teaching EFL and how the teacher and students overcome the problems; and 3) to explain the teacher’s and the students’ perception toward authentic materials in teaching EFL.
This research is a case study taking place in a Senior High School in Surakarta. This research involves an English teacher and students of two classes. The data include events, participants, documents and artifacts which were obtained by observation, interview, questionnaire, and document analysis.
The results of the research are: 1) authentic materials which are actually not created for pedagogical purposes are implemented in teaching EFL with the right and careful selection. Its authenticity and the communicative activities need to be concerned by the teacher to support the implementation of authentic materials in teaching EFL; 2) both students and teachers do not encounter significant problems in using authentic materials. However, both the students and the teacher still have difficulties in the implementation of authentic materials in EFL classroom that they can still overcome; and 3) the students and the teacher have positive perception toward authentic materials used in teaching EFL.
