ABSTRACK

The aim of the study is to find correlation between (1) students’ speaking habit and speaking skill; (2) vocabulary mastery and speaking skill; (3) students’ speaking habit and vocabulary mastery toward speaking skill.


This is a correlational method. Correlational research is a kind of quantitative research. The population was class A of sixth semester students of English Education of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Sebelas Maret University in academic year of 2017/2018. The sample was 26 students taken by random sampling. The instruments in collecting the data were questionnaire and test. The questionnaire was used to know students’ speaking habit, while the tests were used to collect data of vocabulary mastery and speaking skill.


The result of this research show that (1) there is a positive correlation between students’ speaking habit and speaking skill (rx1y= 0.945); (2) there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking skill (rx2y= 0.917); (3) there is a positive correlation between students’ speaking habit, vocabulary mastery, and speaking skill (R= 0.956). Based on the results of the study, it is known that the first hypothesis saying that there is a positive correlation between students’ speaking habit and speaking skill is accepted. The second hypothesis saying that there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking skill is also accepted. The third hypothesis saying that there is a positive correlation between students’ speaking habit, vocabulary mastery, and speaking skill of the sixth semester students of English Education of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Sebelas Maret University in the academic year of 2017/2018 is also accepted.


The result of this research shows that speaking habit and vocabulary have some contribution and are important for the students’ speaking skill. Both students’ speaking habit and vocabulary mastery have significant contribution in speaking skill.
