ABSTRACK

The aims of this research are: (1) to describe the situation when animation video was implemented as media in learning English to make the students be more motivated; (2) to describe whether animation videos increase students’ competence in learning English.

The method used in the research is a classroom action research which was conducted in two cycles at seventh grade of SMP Kristen 4 Surakarta. The data were collected through interview, observation, questionnaire, and test. The qualitative data were analyzed by assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretations, and reporting the outcomes. The quantitative data were analyzed by comparing the mean score of the last students’ score from the teacher and post-test from the researcher.

The research finding shows that: (1) classroom situation was more alive and active. The situation indicated that students were beginning to be motivated in learning. (2) Students’ competence were more visible when students got the increasing of the first post test score and even in the last post test score is accordance with the goal of learning with expectation score that is about more than minimal score criteria.
