This research is aimed to: (1) analyze whether the scientific approach based on Curriculum 2013 has been applied in the “BRIGHT” an English textbook for the seventh grade of junior high school students or not, and (2) investigate to what extent the textbook of “BRIGHT” has applied the scientific approach based on 2013 curriculum.
This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The researcher uses document in the form “BRIGHT” an English textbook for the seventh grade of junior high school students as the data source and uses document analysis as the data collection. The researcher took four units as the sample of the research. The technique of analyzing data uses a theory proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana which comprises: data condensation, data display and conclusion drawing, and verification.
It is analyzed based on the compatibility of the scientific approach stages of 2013 Curriculum which comprises: observing, questioning, experimenting, associating, and communicating. The findings of the research are: There are 30 activities in observing stage, and those observing activities are in the form of: reading, listening, scrutinizing, and seeing, 1 activity in questioning stage, and the questioning activity is in the form of: asking questions to get additional information, 12 activities in experimenting stage, and those experimenting activities are in the form of: conduct an experiment, read other sources, observe an object or activity, and interview with the interviewees, 16 activities in associating stage, and those associating activities are in the form of: processing information from the observed activities/experiments for gathering information and processing information from various sources for making solutions, also 7 activities in communicating stage, and those communicating activities are in the form of: convey the results from the observations, or from the analysis verbally and written.
The result of the research shows that (1) The textbook “BRIGHT” an English textbook for the seventh grade of junior high school students has applied the scientific approach and (2) The compatibility of scientific approach in the textbook is 75?tivities support the scientific approach in Unit 4 and 25?tivities do not support the scientific approach. In Unit 6, 70.8?tivities support the scientific approach and 29.2?tivities do not support the scientific approach. In Unit 7, 65.2?tivities support the scientific approach and 34.8?tivities do not support the scientific approach. Then, in Unit 12, 59.2?tivities support the scientific approach and 40.8?tivities do not support the scientific approach.
