ABSTRACT

A Correlation between Emotional Intelligence, Grammar  Mastery and  Reading Comprehension  (A Correlational Study on the Ninth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Sempor  in the Academic Year 2016/ 2017). The objectives of this research are to find out the correlation between (1) emotional intelligence and reading comprehension; (2) grammar mastery and reading comprehension; and (3) emotional intelligence, grammar mastery and reading comprehension.
This research used quantitative method, that is, correlational study. The study was carried out in 18-21 July 2016 at SMP Negeri 1 Sempor Kabupaten Kebumen. The population was all the ninth grade students consisting of eight classes. The total number of students was 240. The sample was 30 students taken by cluster random sampling technique. The instruments in collecting the data were tests and questionnaire. Objective test was used to collect the data of reading comprehension and grammar mastery; while a questionnaire was used to collect the data of  emotional intelligence. The techniques used to analyze the data were Single Correlation and Multiple Regression Correlation.
The results of the data analysis show that in the level of significance of ?
=0.05 (1) there is a positive and significant correlation between emotional intelligence and reading comprehension (       = 0.800 > rt = 0.361); (2) there is a positive and significant correlation between   grammar   mastery   and   reading comprehension  (          =0.683 > rt     =  0.361);  and  (3)  there  is  positive  and significant  correlation between   emotional intelligence,  grammar mastery and reading comprehension (Ry12   = 0.865 and Fo = 39.97 > Ft = 3.35).
Based on the results of the study, it is concluded that there is a positive
and significant correlation between emotional intelligence and reading comprehension. There is a positive and significant correlation between grammar mastery and reading comprehension, and there is positive and significant correlation between emotional intelligence, grammar mastery simultaneously and reading comprehension of the ninth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Sempor  in the academic year of 2016-2017.
The result of this research shows that emotional intelligence and grammar mastery are important factors that give contribution to reading comprehension. Both emotional intelligence and grammar mastery give 74.74?fective contribution to reading comprehension. So, emotional intelligence and grammar mastery should be considered in increasing reading comprehension, although the factors are not the only variables determining reading comprehension.
