The Hollywood movies often represent negative portrayals depicting Hispanic people as poor, uneducated, illegal immigrants, job stealers, sexpot and so on without seeing the great contribution the Hispanic give to America. This can bring up negative misconception that can greatly affect certain groups of people and can lead to discrimination. One of the Hollywood films depicting the Hispanic immigrant’s misconception is the Spanglish movie by James.L brook. The research is to analyze the misconception of Hispanic immigrants depicted in the Spanglish movie and examine what factors affecting these perceptions. Additionally, I used some disciplines in the forms of theories and approaches to analyze the movie. Socio cultural approach is needed to analyze the social structure in Mexico and America. I also analyze the figures using semiotic theory. The Spanglish movie raises sensitive and mostly negative social issues about Hispanic Immigrant. There are at least four representations that can be found from this film, namely Mexican as strict parent, Hispanic cannot Assimilates, Hispanic Immigrants as poor people and Latina as a sexpot. It is hoped this study will increase public awareness about discrimination issues that can be very destructive to the way we socialize, especially in the multicultural societies.
