The objectives of this study are (1) to investigate the pronunciation errors performed by the students in the selected context, (2) to analyse the cause of the errors, and (3) to enumerate the frequency of the errors.

This study uses descriptive qualitative method, carried out at English Department of Universitas Sebelas Maret in May 2019. The population of this research is the second semester students in the academic year of 2018/2019. Thirty five students divided into two classes, and 20 students of class A served as the sample. Data are obtained from observation by recording the students’ performance as they were delivering a presentation, and interview. Once the data were collected, the pronunciation errors were described and classified into four types based on surface strategy taxonomy: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The errors were also categorized based on segmental feature violation: long vowels, short vowels, diphthongs and triphthongs, voiced consonants, and voiceless consonants.

Data analysis revealed that all students performed errors in English pronunciation, covering all types of error and involving all segmental features. Students performed 53 or 12.77% omission, 19 or 4.58?dition, 341 or 82.17% misformation, and 2 or 0.48% misordering errors. In terms of segmental feature, short vowels are violated the most, amounting to 149 (35.90% of 415 total errors), followed by diphthongs & triphthongs (94 or 22.65%), voiced consonants (84 or 20.24%), voiceless consonants (59 or 14.22%), and long vowels (29 or 6.99%). The errors performed by students are caused by interlingual (405 errors or 97.59%) and intralingual transfer (10 errors or 2.41%). Interlingual transfer refers to the interference of students’ mother tongue, in this case Bahasa Indonesia, such as the absence of some English sounds in Bahasa Indonesia, the fact that vocabularies in Bahasa Indonesia do not end with more than one consonant except those derived from other languages, that the pronunciation of alphabets in Bahasa Indonesia does not change although they form different words, that all alphabets in a word in Bahasa Indonesia are pronounced, and that there is no suffixes added at the end of words in Bahasa Indonesia to indicate the tense applied to a verb, the subject doing the action, or to make plural nouns. Meanwhile, intralingual transfer refers to the students’ overgeneralization of English pronunciation rules.
