Abstrak

The objectives of this research are to reveal: (1) the type of teachers and students’ attitude towards the implementation of scientific approach in oral competence teaching at the tenth graders of SMA Negeri 1 Situbondo in the Academic   Year   2016-2017;   (2)   the   influence   of   the   attitudes   to   the implementation of scientific approach in oral competence teaching at the tenth graders of SMA Negeri 1 Situbondo in the Academic Year 2016-2017; and (3) the implication of the attitudes on the students’ achievement in oral competence at the tenth graders of SMA Negeri 1 Situbondo in the Academic Year 2016-2017.
The research method was qualitative case study. The research was conducted at SMAN 1 Situbondo in the academic year of 2016/2017. The respondents of this research were three English teachers implementing scientific approach in oral competence teaching, and the students taught with curriculum 2013. The sample was taken by using purposive sampling. The instruments of collecting data were questionnaire checklist, interview, observation field notes, and documentation. In this research, triangulation and member checking were applied to ensure the data were trustworthy. Spradley’s Ethnographic Data Analysis Technique was applied to analyse the data. There were four main stages of analysing the data, namely domain analysis, taxonomy analysis, componential analysis and cultural theme analysis.
The  result  of  data  analysis  revealed  that:  (1)  English  teachers  and students of Tenth Graders of SMAN 1 Situbondo have positive attitudes toward the implementation of scientific approach in oral competence teaching; (2) The implementation of scientific approach in SMA Negeri 1 Situbondo was well- implemented, even though it was not perfectly similar with the curriculum demands; and (3) Most of the students in grade X of SMA Negeri 1 Situbondo have attained the degree of achievement of oral competence which means that scientific approach is able to make students communicate orally and have better achievement in oral competence in English subject.
Based on the findings, scientific approach was well-implemented to teach oral competence learning in the classroom. Still, scientific approach cannot be implemented as the single approach in oral competence teaching. Teachers need to find the most appropriate approaches to be used along with scientific approach. Consequently, English teachers must be supported to make essential adjustment proposed by curriculum. When teachers implement scientific approach in accordance with the curriculum demands, it is expected that the teaching and learning process of oral competence can run well and the classroom objectives can be achieved.
