Abstrak

This study was aimed at finding out: (1) whether there is a significant difference in writing skill between the students taught using Mind Mapping technique and the students taught using Guided Writing technique; and (2) whether Mind Mapping technique is more effective than Guided Writing for teaching writing.
The research method used in this study is a quasi-experimental research design. This research was conducted at SMA N 5 Surakarta in the academic year of 2017/2018. The population of this research is the first grade of social class of SMA N 5 Surakarta. The samples of this research are class X IPS 1 belongs to experimental group which consists of 30 students and class X IPS 5 belongs to control group which consists of 30 students. The research instrument used to collect the data in this study is test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula.
The computation of the t-test shows that tobservation (to) = 3.27423 is higher than ttable (58, 0.05) = 2.00172. It can be concluded that there is a significant difference in writing skill between the students taught  using Mind Mapping technique and the students taught using Guided Writing technique.  Mind Mapping technique is more effective than Guided Writing technique for teaching writing, it can be seen from the mean score of experimental group is 83.73, while the mean score of control group is 79.47.
