ABSTRAK

The objectives of this study are to analyze: 1) to what extent the textbook of “Bahasa Inggris: Think Globally Act Locally” develop communicative exercises, and 2) to what extent the exercises in “Bahasa Inggris: Think Globally Act Locally” use the types of CLT materials. This study is qualitative content analysis. The source of data is the English textbook entitled “Bahasa Inggris: Think Globally Act Locally” in revised 2018 edition written by Siti Wachidah, Asep Gunawan and Diyantari, and published by The Indonesia Ministry of Education and Culture.  The data collection is conducted by listing the exercises of selected chapters, giving codes to the exercises, and identifying the exercises into categories of communicative exercises and CLT materials. The steps of analyzing data are data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. The results of the study show that: 1) there are seven of ten communicative exercises developed in the textbook, which are scrambled sentence, authenticity, problem-solving, information transfer, opinion-sharing information, task continuity, and roleplay; 2) there are all types of CLT material in the textbook, which are text-based material, task-based material, and realia. Those results mean the textbook is fairly good at developing communicative exercises and CLT materials, so it can be used in teaching and learning English to improve students language skills and they can use the language to communicate in a real-life situation. However, teachers may look for other sources of exercises that not available in the textbook to maximize the learning process and also develop the knowledge from other perspectives.
