This study aims to develop mathematics module based Problem Based Learning (PBL) on material System of Linear Equation in Two Variables  (SLETV) with the aim of improving the students metacognition, to find out the practicality and effectiveness of mathematics module based PBL on material SLETV that aims to improve students metacognition and to find out whether students' metacognition on material SLETV by using mathematics modules based PBL that has been developed is better than to use mathematics textbooks used in schools.

This type of study is Research and Development (R&D). This R&D research procedure uses the development stage proposed by Budiyono which consists of 3 modified stages, namely preliminary study, development, and product efficacy testing. The population of this study is 8th grade students of SMP in Surakarta. The sample of this study were students from SMPN 3 Surakarta, SMP Batik Surakarta, and SMPN 20 Surakarta. The instruments of this study were module assessment sheets by experts, teacher and student response questionnaires, metacognitive knowledge questionnaires, and metacognitive regulation test questions.

The results showed that the validity aspect was based on the assessment of material experts by 3.7, media experts by 3.73, and linguists by 3.81. All three expert judgments are in very good criteria. The practicality aspect was obtained from the student response questionnaire of 3.04 with the agreed criteria and the teacher's questionnaire response of 3.48 with the criteria of strongly agreeing. The effectiveness aspect is obtained from the metacognitive knowledge questionnaire and the metacognitive regulation test questions. The results of the effectiveness test showed that there were differences in students' metacognition between before and after using mathematics modules based PBL on the material SLETV. Besides, when viewed from each component of metacognition there is an increase in students' metacognitive knowledge and metacognitive regulation after using mathematics modules based PBL on material SLETV. In the product efficacy test results obtained that the average metacognition score of the experimental class students was not the same as the metacognition score of the control class students. Besides, when viewed from each component of metacognition that is metacognitive knowledge and metacognitive regulation possessed by experimental class students better than control students. Based on these results it can be concluded that the metacognition which is an experimental class student is better than the metacognition needed by the control class students
