This research aims to explain the code switching employed by the characters in The Da Vinci Code novel. This study focuses on analyzing the types of code switching, the functions of code switching, and the characters’ reasons in uttering code switching. This research is a descriptive qualitative research as the data collected in this research are in the form of utterances uttered by the characters in The Da Vinci Code novel.
The result of this research shows that there are three types of code switching appear in The Da Vinci Code novel. They are tag switching, intra-sentential code switching, and inter-sentential code switching. Meanwhile, the functions of code switching found in this novel involve quotation, addressee specification, interjection, reiteration, and message qualification. Moreover, the characters’ reasons in uttering code switching in this novel are talking about particular topic, quoting someone’s word, expressing feeling about something, inserting sentence connectors (interjection), repeating used for clarification, clarifying the speech content for interlocutor, softening or strengthening request or command, and needing real lexical.
Hence, the result of this research can be used as reference for the further research to analyze sociolinguistics, especially in the study of code switching. Therefore, since this research analyzes the types, the function, and the reasons of characters employ code switching, it would be better for next researcher to analyze it by using another theory of code switching. Additionally, it is suggested for the next researcher to analyze using other sources of data, such as TV program, movie, or comments in social media.  </p>
