This study is a classroom action research about the using of simulation to improve the students’ speaking fluency. The aims of this research are: (1) to identify whether the simulation can improve the students’ English speaking fluency and (2) to describe the class situation when the simulation technique is implemented in the classroom.
This study was conducted in two cycles: the first cycle consisted of four meetings and so did the second cycle. The staged procedures of the research consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. In collecting data, there were two kinds of data which is used in this research, the quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data were in the form of students' score from the pre-test, post-test 1, and post-test 2. The data were taken from the oral test. While for the qualitative data were collected from observation, interview, questioner, field note, and diary.
The results of the research showed that: first, the use of simulation improved the students’ English speaking fluency. The improvement included: (1) the students could speak in normal speech rate, the mean score of rate of speech improved from pre-test (4.55), post-test 1 (7.07), and post-test 2 (8.76); (2) students did not produce filler/filled pause, the mean score improved from pre-test (4.25), post-test 1 (6.93), and post-test 2 (8.78); and (3) students did not keep silent/ hesitate while speaking in front of the class, the mean score improved from pre-test (4.31), post-test 1 (6.94), and post-test 2 (8.79). Overall, the mean scores of the indicators were more than 7.5. The mean scores had reached the minimum completeness criteria. Second, the researcher also found that the class situation had improved. It was indicated by the criteria: (1) Cooperation, the students’ cooperation improved significantly. All students cooperated very well during simulation activities to the simulation performance from the cycle 1 to cycle 2; (2) Teacher support, in this case, the support from teacher and researcher improved very well. They supported and helped students during activities both personally and collectively; (3) Task orientation, the task orientation was given in the teaching and learning process very well. The students could do and finish the task completely and correctly; (4) Involvement, more than 95% of the students were involved actively; (5) Equity, all students could join and conduct the simulation activities well because they had equal chances and process in doing simulation; and (6) Interest, students' interest improved significantly. More than 90% students were interested in joining the process.
