This thesis aims at: (1) describing whether video can increase the participation, and (2) revealing the difficulties on using video when it is used as language learning aid. From the pre-research observation on August 24th, 2016, the problem could be identified as follows: (1) there are still many students keeping silent and doing nothing, when the teacher gives them a question (2) none of the student asking question during the lesson (3) When there is a student forced to answer the question, no other students trying to respond it (4) Those who draw on paper while the discussion is going on, still many students who doze off during the discussion.
The research was conducted in SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Surakarta from August 2016 to September 2016. The subject of this research was the students of the second grade consisting 26 students. A classroom action research was applied in this study, and video was proposed as media used in teaching learning process. Furthermore, the research was done in two cycles with three meetings in each cycle. There were four steps in conducting the research such as planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. In collecting data, it is tallied, whoever gives participation in classroom observation. In the end of the research, the data were analyzed by comparing the sum of student having participation of pre-research, cycle 1 and cycle 2.
The research finding showed that using video in teaching learning process could increase students’ classroom participation. First, the number of students from each cycle showed that the participation gradually increased during the implementation of video in the classroom; the number of student’s participation of pre-research was 48.08% which improved to 63.34% at cycle 1 and further, it improved to 97.76% at cycle 2. Second, there is a difficulty in the implementation of teaching learning process using video as the teaching media that is the students found it quite monotonous to keep paying attention to the more-than-30-minute video continuously.
Through this research, it is confirmed that video helps increasing students’ participation in classroom. Teachers who are interested using video in the classroom, they have to be aware of the difficulty as mentioned above in order to optimize the learning and teaching process in the classroom.
