ABSTRACT

Eszter Sótonyi S131508014. 2017. TRANSLATION ANALYSIS OF INDONESIAN NOMINAL GROUPS AND NOUN PHRASES IN BILINGUAL FOLK TALES Postgraduate Program for Master Degree in Linguistics, UNS.

Equivalence translation means to reproduce source languange or original condition in absoulutely different wording. Catford’s theory underlined that translation empazises on the closest natural equivalence. Catford divides shifts into two categories level shifts and category shifts. The objectives of this study are to identife the shift types and to know the accurancy and acceptability levels of Noun Phrase and Nominal Group in translation of Children Literature. Present study analyzes four bilingual children books which are ‘Puti Mandalika’, ‘Ampak dan Musang yang Cerdik’, ‘Masarasenani dan Matahari’ and ‘Puti Kemang’. They are folktales from Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia which retold by Murti Bunanta and published in 2010. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The data are Noun Phrase and Noun Group in Indonesian as Source Text (ST) and its translation of English as Target Text (TT). The data further were analyzed to investigate the shifts that occured in translation proces. Translation quality is assessed using Nababan theory. Five raters evaluated the accuracy, acceptability and readability of the translation. The results show that translation shifts occured in translation process. The analysis shows that both level shift and category shift can be found in this study. The summarize are 2% of level shift, 74% of structure shift, 6% of class shift, 17% of unit shift, and 1% of intra-system shift. The structure shift is the most frequently occured in the translation process. The translation quality results determined that average accurancy level is 2,56. Acceptability was determined quite acceptable with the average level is 2.58 and the average of readability level is 2,79. Total sore for translation quality is 2,61. It can be concluded that shift cannot be avoided in translation because of the different characteristic between ST and TT. The translation quality can be said good although it is not perfect score but the transltion is quite accurate, acceptable and readable.
