ABSTRACT

This research focused on analyzing directive speech act in Amy and Jimmy the Smart Twin and its translation into Indonesian by exploring the functions of directive speech acts and the techniques used to produce translation in forms of voice-over. Belonging to a descriptive qualitative study, the data sources were spoken text and informants (raters and respondents). The purposive sampling technique was applied to select the 90 data from the data sources. After listening carefully and transcribing the voice-over in both English and Indonesian, the researcher discussed the data through Focus Group Discussion to assess the quality of the translation. Direct observation, recording, and individual interview were also conducted towards respondents to delve more about the readability.
Based on the data analysis, nine categories of directive speech act were found. Those categories are instructing, recommending, ordering, inviting, asking, requesting, offering, challenging, and  warning. This study finds out that there are 13 different techniques applied by the translator. The last result shows that overall, the Indonesian translation is considered accurate, acceptable, and readable to the children since the translator considered the pedagogical approach in translating. It was envisaged in the way he/she reproduced the utterances in the target language, such as the addition of politeness markers, addition of inclusiveness markers, addition of transition markers, addition of modality, addition of operative action, explicitation of visual information, reproduction by using colloquial terms or expressions, and several kinds of modulation.
