Batara Bisuk, G0015024, 2018. Correlation Between Body Mass Index and Depression Level on Adolescent. Mini Thesis. Faculty of Medicine, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta.

 

Backgrounds: The high epidemic and prevalence of depression in Indonesia and less amount of research on body mass index and depression level on adolescent, moreover there are a lot of theories and research result that showed positive and negative correlations made the researcher thought the importance of making research on correlation between nutritional status and depression level on adolescent in Surakarta.

 

Methods: This research is an observational study with cross-sectional research design. This research was conducted at SMK Kristen 1 Surakarta on November 23, 2018. The sampling was carried out by consecutive sampling method. The dependent variable is depression level, while the independent variable is nutritional status. Measurement of body mass indeks used microtoise and weigher, and the researcher used beck depression inventory test to measure the depression level. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 25 with data normality test, Pearson correlation test and Spearman correlation test..

 

Results: The total respondents were 72 people with 68 people who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Respondents consisted of 34 men (50%) and 34 women (50%). There is a weak correlation in which the body mass index is directly proportional to the depression level on all samples with r 0,324. There is no significant correlation between body mass index with depression level on men. Meanwhile there is a mid strong correlation in which the body mass index is directly proportional to the depression level on women with r 0,566.

 

Conclusion: There is a weak correlation in which the body mass index is directly proportional to the depression level on all samples. There is no significant correlation between body mass index with depression level on men. Meanwhile there is a mid strong correlation in which the body mass index is directly proportional to the depression level on women.
