Abstrak :

The main objective of this research is to explore: (1)  the implementation of audiotape dialogue journal to improve  speaking for the eleventh grade students of vocational high School at Kebumen; (2) audiotape dialogue journal effect students’ speaking for the eleventh grade students of vocational high School at Kebumen and (3) the difficulties and solutions in audiotape dialogue journal implementation for the eleventh grade students of vocational high school at Kebumen.

This case study research was conducted at  Vocational HIgh School at Kebumen. The research purposively sampling twenty-seven students of grade XITKR 4. In order to collect the data, the researcher used three techniques of data collection namely interview, observation, and document analysis.

The research findings revealed that: 1) The teacher used the audiotape dialogue journal to give an opportunity for the students to reflect and express ideas during learning English speaking under non-threatening atmosphere and the teacher can observe students’ progress. The procedure of audiotape dialogue journal was done five up to five teen minutes to reflect what the students have learned in the speaking classroom and develop their speaking skill by our classroom students’ assignments. ; 2) Teacher’s difficulties in doing audiotape dialogue journal were regulating time to respond to the students’ audiotape dialogue journal overload and handling to super active students. Whereas, students’ difficulties in doing audiotape dialogue journal were speaking in limited time, fluency, accuracy, vocabulary. pronunciation, and responding to the questions given by the teacher; and 3) To solve the problems managing a schedule to correct the students’ work and responding to the students’ question are really recommended. Besides, giving language knowledge, utilizing peer correction and encouraging autonomous learning in doing audiotape dialogue journal could be applied.to cope with students’ difficulties;4). The results obtained from this study revealed that providing essential information about the target language culture and helping students to reach a cultural understanding to accompany their linguistic knowledge had a positive effect on their speaking
