Information transfer in the context of learning process is not merely carried out only
through oral explanation. The technological era has assisted either the teacher or
the student to use a medium such as Powerpoint. By integrating visual, verbal, and
textual information, Powerpoint as the tool in multimedia-based presentation rises
as the effective medium to transfer the information or knowledge in academic
context.
This research aims to investigate the use of Powerpoint  as multimedia-based
presentation which probed the preparation of the design to the performance. Five
master degree students attending the Academic Speaking classroom were
purposively selected as the informants. This research exerted three data collection
techniques: document analysis, observation, and interview. This qualitative
research was carried out using case study approach to obtain in-depth investigation. 
The results of the research reveal two findings regarding: 1) the design as
Powerpoint as multimedia-based presentation concerning on the point of views
(conceptual aspect) and the applied strategies (technical aspect), 2) the presentation
of Powerpoint as multimedia-based presentation which corresponds to the four
principles of multimedia learning. In the preparation of the design, the
considerations made by the presenters are as follows: accommodating the
audience’s learning style and mapping the audience’s interest. Meanwhile, the
strategies employed by the presenters cover the slide structure, slide density, and
the function of visual element.
In accordance with the performance, the planning that has been made is in line with
the practice, such as 1) empowering the presentation by attaching the visual
information to the textual information and being assisted by the oral explanation
(multimedia effect), 2) making the presentation on point by paraphrasing and
summarizing the content, and filtering the irrelevant information (coherence effect),
3) linking among the materials by using visual information (spatial contiguity
effect), and 4) interacting with audience by utilizing the visual element integrated
with the textual information to create positive climate (personalization effect). The
research opens chances for further researcher to elaborate the finding in the more
detailed way so that the comprehensive finding can be revealed.
