ABSTRAK
This research focuses on an analysis of translation techniques applied in translating fashion terms in the book entitled Metric Pattern Cutting for Women’s wear (fifth edition) and the quality of translation in terms of accuracy and acceptability. The purposes of this research are: (1) to identify the translation techniques applied by the translator in translating fashion terms found in the book entitled Metric Pattern Cutting for Women’s wear (fifth edition); and (2) to find out the impact of the use of translation techniques towards the quality of fashion terms translation in terms of accuracy and acceptability.
This research was a descriptive-qualitative research by using purposive sampling technique. The data are all fashion terms found in the book entitled Metric Pattern Cutting for Women’s wear (fifth edition) and the result of translation quality assessment. The data source of this research is the book entitled Metric Pattern Cutting for Women’s wear (fifth edition) and six raters. In collecting the data, the researcher applied three methods, namely content analysis, focus group discussion, and in-depth interview. The data were analyzed by using data analysis method proposed by Spradley (1979) which includes domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, componential analysis, and finding cultural theme.
The analysis on the translation technique shows that there are 5 single techniques applied by the translator in translating fashion terms. The techniques are: Pure Borrowing (79 data), Naturalized Borrowing (1 datum), Established Equivalent (107 data), Generalization (2 data), and Literal Translation (4 data). Moreover, the translator also applies couplet and triplet technique. There are 3 combinations of couplet technique found in this research, namely established equivalent + amplification, pure borrowing + amplification, and pure borrowing + established equivalent. There is only one combinations of triplet technique, namely established equivalent + pure borrowing + amplification.
The research findings indicate that the techniques which produce the high level of accuracy in translation of fashion terms are established equivalent and borrowing technique. Meanwhile, the techniques which produce the low level of accuracy in translation of fashion terms are literal translation and generalization. In term of acceptability, the use of established equivalent technique either on single technique, couplet or triplet, gives a positive impact on the level of acceptability of the translation. It is because the translator uses equivalent Indonesian terms which are familiar and commonly used by the readers.
Meanwhile, the technique which gives a bad impact to the level of acceptability of the data is borrowing technique.
