This study is aimed to find out the politeness strategies used by the host and the guest in a talkshow and the implied meanings of the utterances in expressing positive politeness strategies. The subjects of this study were the host and the guest of an American talkshow named Rubin Report. The focus is on positive politeness strategies. The data was gathered from youtube video recording in the form of utterances uttered by the host and the guest by writing the transcript. In the data analysis, after finding and identifying the types of Positive Politeness Strategies and implied meanings of the utterances expressing Positive Politeness Strategy, it is found that the host and the guest used thirty-four utterances with fourteen different types of positive politeness strategies. The host used more strategies than the guest but the utterances they made indicate that they want to be polite to each other and relate to the implied meaning of utterance in expressing positive politeness strategies. The researcher identifies the types of positive politeness strategies after analyzing the notion and looking at the context of the conversation. This research finds that the host and the guest save each other’s faces using positive politeness strategies with positive intention. This result can be applied to build characters, get deeper understanding, make good relationship, and know the best way to act in social life.
