Abstrak

This is a descriptive-qualitative research, which focuses on the analysis of the translation of taboo expressions on the movie entitled Deadpool 2 and aims to find out (i) the types of taboo expressions in the movie, (ii) the techniques employed by two different translators from different platforms to translate taboo expressions, and (iii) the effects of translation techniques the two translators used in the acceptability of target texts.
The sources of data used in this research are the dialogues on Deadpool 2 movie and their Indonesian subtitles produced by two different translators and also ten respondents to assess the translation acceptability, or in this research called familiarity, through questionnaire. A total of 167 data of taboo expressions were found in the movie, which were later classified into eight categories including sexual references (41%), offensive slang (25%), profanity or blasphemy (11%), scatological references and disgusting object (10%), insulting references to perceived psychological, physical, or social deviations (7%), animal names (2%), ancestral allusions (2%), and ethnic-racial-gender slurs (1%). After analyzing the data, the researcher found the differences in techniques the two translators used in translating the dubtitles and the effects of the application of the techniques. From the total of eleven translation techniques found, the Google Play Movie & TV translator used ten techniques that tend to tone down the taboo in TT, they are generalization (29%), deletion (29%), maintaining with different lexical items (9%), maintaining with the same lexical items (8%), translating to proper interjection (8%), mitigating with same lexical items (4%), substitution (4%), euphemism (3%), reformulation (3%), and mitigating with different lexical items (2%). Meanwhile, the fansubber used eight techniques resulting the retainment of taboo expressions in TT, they are they are maintaining with the same lexical items (32%),    deletion    (23%),    maintaining    with    different    lexical    items    (17%), generalization (14%), substitution (3%). literal translation (9%), translating to the proper interjection (1%), and euphemism (1%). The analysis on the acceptability shows  that  TT  of  Google  Play  Movie  &  TV  is  more  acceptable  for  the respondents than TT of fansub due to the lesser number of data classified as unacceptable translations in Google Play Movie & TV. The findings  provide useful data within descriptive translation studies; nevertheless, they cannot be generalized since the study is limited by relatively small data.
