Abstrak

The objectives of this research are to classify the types of proper names found in the novel The Slippery Slope, identify the techniques used by the translator in translating the proper names into Indonesian, and analyze the translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability.

This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The sources of data which consist of documents and informants are selected using purposive sampling technique. The first data are proper names found in the tenth novel of A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Slippery Slope in the form of words and phrases and their translations, while  the informants  are two  raters who  validated  the data  and  assessed  the translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. The data are obtained by conducting content analysis and focus group discussion.

The research findings show that a total of 114 data are classified into 3 types of proper names, they are names of people (47.4%), names of objects (36.8%), and geographical  names (15.8%).  Moreover,  this research  identifies  17  translation techniques used by the translator to translate the proper names in the novel The Slippery Slope into Indonesian. Copy is the most frequently used technique, followed by rendition. Furthermore, the result shows that rendition technique gives the biggest positive impact to the accuracy and acceptability of the translation. The score of the accuracy is 2.84 and the score of the acceptability is 2.96. Finally, the total score of the translation quality is 2.89, indicating the high level of accuracy and acceptability.
