Textbook has a significant role in the importance of learning English. This content analysis research is aimed to check whether the 8-grader English textbook of “When English Rings a Bell” is 1) suitable with the basic competences of Curriculum 2013; and (2) fulfilling the criteria of a good textbook based on Alan Cunningsworth’s criteria or not.
The research used descriptive qualitative method, while the process of collecting data is by reading the whole textbook, deciding the units which will be analyzed as the representative of the whole textbook, and collecting data of the textbook from the selected chapters. Meanwhile in analyzing the data, the researcher used data preparation, delineating and processing meaning units, finding overall organizing structure for the data, generating of categories, and abstracting the main findings.
The result of the research shows that (1) the textbook is suitable with the basic competences of Curriculum 2013. The scores of the compatibility of the textbook with basic competences of Curriculum 2013 make a total of 70.65%; and (2) the textbook is quite fulfilling the criteria of a good textbook by Alan Cunningsworth by percentage of 88.88%.
With total score of 70.65% and 88.88% the textbook is categorized as an good textbook which can facilitate the requirement of mastering the basic competence in Curriculum 2013 and the criteria of a good textbook by Alan Cunningsworth.
