Translating idiom is a challenging issue for a translator as it is closely related to the context, culture, and language style. In the process of translating idiom, a translator might face difficulties which affect the strategy chosen to transfer the meaning. The novel The Hate U Give and its translation provide examples of idiom translation, especially negative polarity idioms (NPIDs). This research focuses on the analysis of NPIDs found in The Hate U Give, the translation strategies, and the impacts of the strategies on the quality of the translation of NPIDs in The Hate U Give in terms of accuracy and acceptability. This study employs descriptive qualitative method. A total of 74 data were collected through content analysis and focus group discussion. The results of this study show that the 74 data of NPIDs consist of five data (6.75%) of affix-negation, six data (8.1%) of no-negation, and 63 data (85.13%) of not-negation. This research indicates four strategies applied by the translator to render NPIDs, which include using an idiom of similar meaning and form (four data or 5.41%), using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form (10 data or 13.51%), translation by paraphrase (59 data or 79.73%), and translation by omission of a play on idiom (one datum or 1.35%). Meanwhile, the results on the translation quality show that the translation is accurate with the score of 2.93, and acceptable with the score of 2.9. The total score of the translation quality is 2.91. In this research, the strategies which contribute to accurate translation are translation by using an idiom of similar meaning and form, using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, and translation by paraphrase. Meanwhile, for the acceptability aspect, all four strategies contribute to acceptable translation.
