Land use land cover (LULC) classification has been widely studied in remote sensing and GIS for the purpose of agricultural, ecological and hydrological processes. This study applied supervised classification method with maximum likelihood classification algorithm in ArcGIS 10.1 software to identify land use land cover changes observed in Abaya Chamo sub-basin, Ethiopia by using Landsat 4-5TM and Landsat-8 OLI/TIRS images for the years 1995, 2000 and 2017. The LULC classification of the sub-basin was classified into seven major classes. It was found that barren soil, farmland, Lake Abaya and vegetation area had been increased within two decades and the annual rate of change was 0.08%, 0.45%, 0.25% and 0.37% respectively, but grass and shrubland, and woodland area has been decreased by an annual rate of change of 0.48% and 0.10% respectively. In the current situation because of deforestation and expansion of farmlands the sub-basin lakes are under stress by surface runoff, sediment yield and groundwater extraction. Technologies of RS (remote sensing), GIS (geographic information system), the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) methods, and other statistical methods were employed to implement. The results shown that during the recent decade, more than 87% of the total land area in the study area was dominated by agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry production; the areas of foreland and water body were increased, while others decreased. The eco-environment response to LUC displayed spatial distribution, it can be concluded that the excellent eco-environment quality, with the stable ecosystem, was mainly located in mountain region covering a larger vegetation, the poor and bad level of eco-environment quality associated with plain region that is dominated by the greater extent of human activities. The change of eco-environment quality grades in the study area was mainly associated with LUC. Penelitian ini dilakukan di Kabupaten Sukoharjo untuk menganalisis secara deskriptif mengenai penyebab, bentuk, dan dampak dari alih fungsi lahan. Penelitian deskriptif dipilih untuk mendapatkan gambaran lebih mendalam mengenai fenomena alih fungsi lahan yang terjadi di Kabupaten Sukoharjo. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa industri dan migrasi mendorong peningkatan kepadatan penduduk serta meningkatkan kebutuhan perumahan. Hal tersebut mendorong alih fungsi lahan di Kabupaten Sukoharjo. Bentuk alih fungsi lahan yang terjadi adalah perubahan dari lahan pertanian ke non pertanian. Lahan pertanian yang berubah adalah sawah tadah hujan, tegal, dan sawah dengan irigasi teknis. Lahan non pertanian yang bertambah adalah tanah pekarangan. Selain itu, alih fungsi lahan banyak terjadi di wilayah utara Kabupaten Sukoharjo yang berbatasan dengan Kota Surakarta. Land use land cover (LULC) classification has been widely studied in remote sensing and GIS for the purpose of agricultural, ecological and hydrological processes. This study applied supervised classification method with maximum likelihood classification algorithm in ArcGIS 10.1 software to identify land use land cover changes observed in Abaya Chamo sub-basin, Ethiopia by using Landsat 4-5TM and Landsat-8 OLI/TIRS images for the years 1995, 2000 and 2017. The LULC classification of the sub-basin was classified into seven major classes. It was found that barren soil, farmland, Lake Abaya and vegetation area had been increased within two decades and the annual rate of change was 0.08%, 0.45%, 0.25% and 0.37% respectively, but grass and shrubland, and woodland area has been decreased by an annual rate of change of 0.48% and 0.10% respectively. In the current situation because of deforestation and expansion of farmlands the sub-basin lakes are under stress by surface runoff, sediment yield and groundwater extraction. Technologies of RS (remote sensing), GIS (geographic information system), the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) methods, and other statistical methods were employed to implement. The results shown that during the recent decade, more than 87% of the total land area in the study area was dominated by agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry production; the areas of foreland and water body were increased, while others decreased. The eco-environment response to LUC displayed spatial distribution, it can be concluded that the excellent eco-environment quality, with the stable ecosystem, was mainly located in mountain region covering a larger vegetation, the poor and bad level of eco-environment quality associated with plain region that is dominated by the greater extent of human activities. The change of eco-environment quality grades in the study area was mainly associated with LUC. Penelitian ini dilakukan di Kabupaten Sukoharjo untuk menganalisis secara deskriptif mengenai penyebab, bentuk, dan dampak dari alih fungsi lahan. Penelitian deskriptif dipilih untuk mendapatkan gambaran lebih mendalam mengenai fenomena alih fungsi lahan yang terjadi di Kabupaten Sukoharjo. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa industri dan migrasi mendorong peningkatan kepadatan penduduk serta meningkatkan kebutuhan perumahan. Hal tersebut mendorong alih fungsi lahan di Kabupaten Sukoharjo. Bentuk alih fungsi lahan yang terjadi adalah perubahan dari lahan pertanian ke non pertanian. Lahan pertanian yang berubah adalah sawah tadah hujan, tegal, dan sawah dengan irigasi teknis. Lahan non pertanian yang bertambah adalah tanah pekarangan. Selain itu, alih fungsi lahan banyak terjadi di wilayah utara Kabupaten Sukoharjo yang berbatasan dengan Kota Surakarta. Alih fungsi lahan tersebut membawa dampak pada berkurangnya lahan pertanian, pergeseran ekonomi berbasiskan industri dan perdagangan, serta ancaman degradasi lingkungan.
