× ABSTRAK The leaves extract of Tamarindus indica contains several substances that useful as antibacterial, such as flavonoids, tannins, saponins, alkaloids, sesquiterpenes, and phlobatamins. The aim of the research whether there is antibacterial effect of leaves extract of Tamarindus indica to Staphylococcus aureus from the pyoderma invitro. The method of the research used experimental laboratory with posttest only controlled group design. The sampling was quota sampling, which is consists of 15 pus samples from pyoderma in Sebelas Maret University Microbiology Laboratory. The subject was Staphylococcus aureus from pyoderma. Antibacterial activity testing was based on the agar diffusion method. Staphylococcus aureus was used as tested bacteria. Testing inoculum was swabbed on solidified Mueller Hinton agar. Fifty microlitres of 75%, 100%, 125% leaves extract of Tamarindus indica were applied. The same volume of aquabidest was also tested as negative control while a 30µg cefoxitin antibiotic disc as positive control. Then the agar plates were incubated for 18 hours at either 37 oC. The diameters of the clear growth inhibition zones around the hole were measured. The data analyzed with oneway anova test for comparing the difference mean between the control and the treated groups then continued with post hoc test. The result of the research between the negative control (0,00mm) to 75% (17,03mm), 100% (19,4mm), 125% (20,67mm) concentrate of the Tamarindus indica leaves extract and the positive control (29,13mm) have a significant difference (p < 0,05). There is significant difference (p < 0,05) between 100% concentrate of the Tamarindus indica leaves extract (19,4mm) to the negative control (0,00mm), the positive control (29,13mm), and 75% concentrate (17,03mm). And there is also a significant difference (p < 0,05) between the positive control (29,13mm) to the negative control (0,00mm), 75% (17,03mm), 100% (19,4mm), and 125% (20,67mm) concentrate of the Tamarindus indica leaves extract. Both 100% (19,4mm) and 125% (20,67mm) concentrate of the Tamarindus indica leaves extract don’t have a significant difference (p > 0,05). As the conclusion, there is antibacterial effect of the Tamarindus indica leaves extract to the Staphylococcus aureus growth invitro, but it is weaker than 30µg cefoxitin antibiotic disc as the positive control (p < 0,05). There isn,t a significant difference (p > 0,05) antibacterial effect between 100% and 125% concentrate of the Tamarindus indica leaves extract to the Staphylococcus aureus growth invitro. Key words : Tamarindus indica leaves extract – antibacterial – Staphylococcus aureus from the pyoderma
