× ABSTRAK This thesis discusses about the United States political hegemony in Iraq. The discussion uses 2003 Time Magazine edition to know the reflection and respond of the magazine towards Iraq invasion. Since the war was officially launched in 2003, the researcher uses the whole year publication as the source of the data. The purposes of this thesis are to know how Time Magazine described the US political hegemony to Iraq in its 2003 editions and how it responded the issue in form of publication of its covers. The data consist of main data and supporting data. The main data consist from articles and cover’s images of 2003 Time Magazine edition from January up to December. The secondary data are taken from books, articles, and online media that give supporting information to the main data. In order to achieve the goal, the researcher employs an interdisciplinary approach that includes a number of particular approaches. The first one is Antonio Gramsci theory in hegemony. It is used to know how the hegemonic relation occurred and proceeded between US and Iraq. The second one is content analysis approach to explore the elements in the Magazine since articles become main source of data. The third is Roland Barthes’s theory about Semiotics. Since the analysis also includes some images in the covers, this theory is very essential to know the meaning behind the image in relation to hegemony. The last is socio-historical approach. This is used to know the history and social condition of the US society that might be influenced US government’s decision to have a war with Iraq. The analysis leads the writer to conclude that there is reflection of US political hegemonic power over Iraq. The reflection was gained from analyzing titles and content of the articles. Iraq invasion is a portrait of US implementation to maintain its hegemonic power over other countries around the world. Time’s role is very significant to spread the massage that US is still one of super power and greatest country. Moreover, Time’s covers show obviously that US political agenda in Iraq is one of way to maintain its hegemonic power. This research also suggests other study related to US hegemony and Iraq to analyze the economic motive and also the reporting comparison between Time Magazine and any other international magazines.
