The occurrence of non-fluency is an astonishing phenomenon since it frequently manifests in non-native and even in English native speakers' oral performance. The study of non-fluency based on gender (male and female) is significant to conduct due to the distinct oral performance of both speakers' varieties. The current study aims to investigate the characteristics of disfluency in English oral performance between male and female EFL learners, as well as the difference in disfluency in both speaker varieties. This study also identifies the factors that influence the occurrence of disfluency in the speakers' speeches. This study's participants are 16 undergraduates from a private university in Indonesia, 8 male and 8 female English education students. The study includes field research and in-depth interviews. The results show that both types of speakers produce non-fluencies in their English oral production (filled pauses, silent pauses, repetition, prolongation, hesitation, incomplete phrase, broken word, false start, grammatical error). The distinction between the total number of disfluencies and the sequence of disfluencies in the speeches becomes the finding that differentiates disfluency in males and females. The cognitive, social, and psychological sources are identified as factors that contribute to the occurrence of those inconsistencies. This paper strongly recommends that EFL speakers should be introduced to the concept of disfluency features and that they participate in well-trained activities that focus on improving fluency in order to make their speeches sound more eloquent and natural.
